Honda SUV and car model range explained

Honda is known for its economical engines and impressive reliability.

The Japanese brand also stands out for innovative thinking and engineering excellence. When it wants to be, Honda is one of the most interesting carmakers, although its electric car development lags behind some other manufacturers. Here’s every Honda available now, so you can pick your favourite.

Honda Jazz

2023 Honda Jazz driving

The Honda Jazz is a superb small car that’s always been shackled with a reputation as an older person’s car. If you can look past that, you’ll enjoy a hybrid engine that achieves over 60mpg without needing to be plugged in, an easy and assured driving experience, and a vast amount of rear-seat space considering the Jazz isn’t a big car. It’s well worth looking at if you’re after an easy-to-park car that feels like a limousine.

Honda Civic

One of our favourite family hatchbacks, the Honda Civic is a bit longer than the likes of the Volkswagen Golf or Peugeot 308. That unlocks a lot more rear-seat space than you might expect, plus a usefully large boot for all your stuff and a coupe-like style. The Civic has a perfect driving experience for the day-to-day: the hybrid engine manages over 55mpg and doesn’t drone at full volume when you ask for full power some like some hybrids do. At the same time, the Civic is fun to drive, with a delicious flowing feel along an undulating B-road.

Honda Civic Type R

Honda Civic Type R models

Emissions regulations have brought the Civic Type R’s lifespan to a cruel end. We’re not crying, someone must be chopping onions nearby.

While expensive, driving the latest Civic Type R should be on your bucket list if you’re a keen helmsperson. A fiery engine, wicked handling, a perfect manual gearshift and snug bucket seats add up to a driving experience that’s bordering on what you’d get in a full-bore touring car racer.

Honda SUV range

Honda HR-V

Take the Jazz’s frugal engine and flip-up Magic Seats, wrap them in a trendy small SUV bodystyle, and the result is the Honda HR-V. So there’s plenty to like in the ‘Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle’. Interior quality takes a step up over the Jazz, and the mix of nice materials and not overly intrusive technology means the HR-V is very easy to live with.

Honda ZR-V

If the HR-V’s porridge is too hot and the CR-V’s porridge is too cold, the Honda ZR-V could be the 'Goldilocks' point in Honda’s SUV range. Using a lot of the same parts as the Civic, the hybrid-powered ZR-V is still good to drive and impressively keen to stop you going to a petrol station too often.

Honda CR-V

Honda’s biggest SUV now comes with the choice of ‘self-charging’ hybrid or plug-in-hybrid engines, the latter giving you up to 50 miles of zero-emission driving with a full battery. Use the car as intended and the CR-V could save you plenty of money in petrol, while providing an engine as a backup for long journeys. The smartly styled CR-V offers plenty of space and enough toys, although you’d hope so considering its flagship price position.

Honda Prelude

Temper your expectations: the Honda Prelude isn’t a rival to an out-and-out sports car like the BMW M240i or Porsche Cayman. Instead, it’s a great daily sports car, and a slightly left-field rival to the likes of the Audi TT and BMW 220i. Using the same hybrid engine as the Civic means you get decent enough performance and around 50mpg, but Honda’s sprinkled some magic in by using some of the suspension from the Civic Type R. Make sure to press the S+ button, which simulates gearshifts with control via the steering wheel paddles. Sounds like a PlayStation gimmick, but it really works.

Honda electric car range

Honda e

Honda’s first electric car was immensely desirable but too expensive as a new car – especially considering its short range. That means it’s a rare find. Thankfully, used examples aren’t very expensive now, so you might be able to consider one as a second car and enjoy the admiring glances and its onboard digital aquarium.

Honda e:Ny1

Honda’s alphabet soup electric car is a small SUV that looks like the HR-V. It’s deliberately more conservative than the Honda e, with more of a mainstream appeal. Up to 256 miles is available from a charge, and the interior is well-built with plenty of standard equipment.

Honda Super-N

The Honda e rides again in the cartoonish Super-N. Based on Japan’s Honda N-One, which complies with the country’s strict kei regulations for small cars, the Super-N is fantastically boxy and that frees up a lot of space in a compact footprint. There’s a boost mode that makes the available power jump up from 63hp to a massive 94hp. While the Super-N will be significantly cheaper the Honda e was, it won’t go any further on a charge, unfortunately.
