The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is still one of our favourite electric family cars, but it’s not perfect – and it’s quite expensive. If it doesn’t quite fit the bill for you, here are 10 cars that are similar to an ID. Buzz. Which one will you pick?
Kia PV5 Passenger
Better than the ID. Buzz for: being cheaper
Seats: 5/7
Electric range: up to 256 miles
The ID. Buzz isn’t the only electric van-based MPV with out-there styling. Kia has decided it wants in on the action, and in 2025 it launched its first-ever commercial vehicle models. A passenger-carrying version was always in the plan, and the sheer versatility and flexibility of the PV5 shows that nicely. But the most appealing part of the PV5 is the money you’ll save against a Buzz – the Kia starts at just over £33,000; VW charges at least £60,000 for a Buzz. That difference would buy a lot of luxury family holidays.

Volkswagen Multivan
Better than the ID. Buzz for: longer journeys
Seats: 6/7
Electric range: up to 56 miles (eHybrid)
Officially, the ID. Buzz returns up to 298 miles on a full charge… expect considerably less at motorway speeds as you’re fighting through the air with a brick-shaped car. Yes, it’ll fast-charge at up to 200kW for rapid replenishment on the go, but you’ll need to plan your itinerary around your stops. For cross-continental travel or lots of regular long journeys, you’re better off with the Volkswagen Multivan. There are plug-in-hybrid, diesel and even petrol versions, and diesel isn’t a dirty word here – it’s perfectly suited to getting a fully loaded Multivan up to speed and economical motorway cruising.

Citroen e-SpaceTourer
Better than the ID. Buzz for: space
Seats: 9
Electric range: up to 216 miles
Your kids will think the Buzz is a lot cooler than this anonymous thing, but there’s no doubting the extra space you get by choosing the more straight-laced e-SpaceTourer. The clue’s in the name. This super-size Citroen also offers two more seats than the Buzz does, and it’s among the most practical cars you can buy without needing a minibus licence.
Prefer not to drive a Citroen? The Vauxhall Vivaro Life, Peugeot E-Traveller and Toyota Proace Verso are the same besides the bumpers and badges.

Mercedes EQV
Better than the ID. Buzz for: luxury
Seats: 7
Electric range: up to 222 miles
Perhaps you don’t feel like the ID. Buzz’s interior quality matches its pricetag. In which case, go for the Mercedes EQV, which is as luxurious as the brand’s high-end saloons. Leather upholstery, wood trim and big screens come as standard, making the EQV a perfect choice for chauffeuring celebrities… or toddler princesses. There’s also the diesel-powered Mercedes V-Class, or you could wait for the new Mercedes VLE that promises eight seats and 400 miles of electric range.

Ford Tourneo Custom
Better than the ID. Buzz for: number of seats
Seats: 9
Electric range: up to 202 miles (E-Tourneo Custom)
Like the EQV, the Ford Tourneo Custom uses a track-based seating system to maximise versatility. If you want to rearrange the seats to have them rearward facing, or remove them altogether for moving house, you go for it. For the first time, Ford’s biggest people-mover comes with the option of a fully electric powertrain, although its range and charging figures aren’t quite as strong as the Buzz’s. You can also get diesel and plug-in-hybrid versions of the Tourneo Custom.
Or, if you want to stay within the VW Group, the Transporter Shuttle shares its DNA with the Tourneo (not the Multivan, somewhat confusingly).

Hyundai Ioniq 9
Better than the ID. Buzz for: SUV style
Seats: 6/7
Electric range: up to 385 miles
There will be people who think the Buzz looks like a blobby van. If that’s you, you might prefer the space-age lean lines of the Hyundai Ioniq 9. Hyundai’s biggest electric car includes seven seats and a massive boot, while not looking like it’s come straight from a builder’s merchant. As you can see, the Ioniq 9 will go further on a charge than the ID. Buzz, and it’ll charge faster too. Performance? Yep, the Ioniq 9 is better for that as well, with the range-topping model hitting 0-62mph in just 5.2 seconds.

Kia EV9
Better than the ID. Buzz for: warranty

Electric range: up to 349 miles
Sharing its undercrackers with the Ioniq 9, the Kia EV9 is just as vast inside. Three rows of adult-friendly accommodation and a big boot greet you when you open the doors – although by the same coin the EV9 is a little challenging to park. Like the Ioniq 9, you can opt for an opulent six-seat layout, which replaces the middle bench with two swivelling captain’s chairs. But even the regular seven-seat layout maximises comfort with squishy seats and a relaxed ride. Of course, every Kia offers a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty, which is more generous than VW’s three-year/60,000-mile offering.

Volvo EX90
Better than the ID. Buzz for: safety
Seats: 7
Electric range: up to 374 miles
The ID. Buzz is a very safe car, scoring 84% for adult occupant protection and 85% for child occupant protection on the way to a five-star Euro NCAP score. But the EX90, which is apparently the safest Volvo ever made, can claim the moral high ground with scores of 92% and 93% for adult and child protection respectively. Every UK-bound EX90 gets seven seats as standard, and there’s plenty of room inside because the EX90 is even longer than the already-quite-lengthy XC90.

Skoda Peaq
Better than the ID. Buzz for: range
Seats: 7
Electric range: up to 390 miles
Skoda’s new flagship electric model will surely convert some Kodiaq drivers who are ready for electric driving. It might convert a fair few sceptics too, considering its whopping range (and whopping equipment list). The Peaq will charge from 10-80% in under half an hour at a suitably rapid public charger and, like an increasing number of EVs, can power other electricals via Vehicle-to-Load (V2L).

XPeng X9
Better than the ID. Buzz for: in-car entertainment

Electric range: up to 382 miles
Strap in – the tidal wave of Chinese cars coming for the UK isn’t relenting any time soon. Following on from the G6 SUV, the XPeng X9 is a luxurious seven-seat MPV with next-level electric powertrain statistics. Oh, and a karaoke machine with six microphones, a massive rear TV screen, a pano roof and heated seats for everyone. Apparently, if you fold the third row of seats down, there’s enough space for a double bed. Late-night layby meetups just levelled up.
