Why buy a used Smart Car

Smart built its name on ultra-small cars optimised for city driving. Now part of the massive Geely group alongside Volvo and Polestar, Smart is branching out into larger segments with a range of modern EVs. You’ll still find city-friendly models, but there’s now a choice of compact SUVs so you can bring the family along too.

Popular Smart models for sale at Motorpoint

  • Smart Fortwo – Ultra-compact two-seater perfect for city driving
  • Smart Fortwo Cabrio – Open-top version of the Fortwo
  • Smart Forfour – Stretched Fortwo with four-seater practicality
  • Smart #1 – Small electric SUV with just enough space for a family

Owning a Smart Car

Smart ownership mixes great value with low running costs – especially if you buy a nearly new or used model. Much of the range is powered by electricity, so running costs are very low if you can charge at home. The driving experience emphasises comfort and ease over outright performance, with a tight turning circle and excellent visibility.

FAQs

Smart’s entire range is now exclusively powered by electricity, with no more fossil-fuelled options anywhere in the lineup.

The Fortwo Electric comes with a 17kWh battery pack, which equates to a range of 81 miles on a full charge. This is a little shorter than some other EV choices, but it’ll probably be enough for drivers that mainly drive in cities and suburban areas.

The marginally larger Forfour Electric uses the exact same 17kWh battery pack as the Fortwo. In this car, that gives a range of around 78 miles – again, not a lot when measured against its rivals, but plenty for the intended user.

EQ is the Smart brand name for its electric lineup. This is borrowed directly from its parent company Mercedes, which also brands its electric vehicles under the EQ banner.

Looking at reliability surveys carried out by ReliabilityIndex, Auto Express and This is Money, Smart tends to perform mid-table for reliability, with engine problems singled out as a potential problem point. However, these issues are, hopefully, a thing of the past now that Smart has transitioned away from engines to far simpler battery and electric motor setups.

Of course! All used Smart cars sold by Motorpoint are offered with flexible hire purchase (HP) and personal contract purchase (PCP) finance options.
