Automatic 4x4s FAQs

Yes, absolutely – in fact these days you're more likely to find an automatic 4x4 than one with a manual gearbox.

An automatic 4x4 car is going to perform well in snow, so long as you've fitted appropriate winter tyres. Even the toughest 4x4 will struggle in snow and mud if it's running summer tyres. Fit some winter tyres and you'll have much more grip.

If you want a car that's relaxing to drive yet also capable in muddy car parks and wintry weather, an automatic 4x4 is an excellent choice. For a start you don't have to worry about changing gears yourself, but you've also got the back-up of a system that can send power to whichever wheels need it most in slippery conditions. Be aware that if you want to tackle some proper off-roading or icy conditions, you'll still need to fit winter tyres for maximum grip.
