Mercedes three-year warranty – everything you need to know

Mercedes offers a three-year factory warranty on its cars – the same as rivals Audi and BMW.

The agreement extends to all Mercedes passenger cars including the A-Class hatchback, the posh GLC SUV and the stately E-Class. This is the industry-standard level of coverage for most brands, but carmakers like Toyota, Kia and MG have longer warranties.

We'll explain what Mercedes' manufacturer warranty includes in this guide, as well as common exclusions for you to avoid.

Mercedes three-year warranty overview

  • Applies to all Mercedes car models
  • Lasts for three years
  • No mileage limit
  • Doesn't cover parts that are considered wear-and-tear
  • Doesn't cover damage caused by accidents, misuse or neglect
  • Automatically transfers between owners for as long as the cover remains valid
  • High-voltage EV and hybrid batteries are covered under separate warranties
  • Mercedes offers an extended warranty at an extra cost

How long is Mercedes' manufacturer warranty?

Mercedes' warranty on its passenger cars lasts for three years. Unlike some brands, there is no mileage limit with this warranty. The three-year period is counted from the day your car was first registered. You can use the DVLA's vehicle information checker to find your car's exact registration date.

This applies only to the main vehicle warranty that covers most mechanical and electrical repairs. Mercedes includes separate warranties with different levels of cover for the high-voltage battery packs used in its plug-in-hybrid and fully electric models. It also covers anti-perforation (internal rust) under separate terms.

What does Mercedes' three-year warranty cover?

Mercedes E-Class side on

Mercedes warranty cover is broad, and includes "the repair or replacement of any parts necessary to get you moving again, as quickly as possible, at no charge". However, based on the exclusions covered in more detail below, the warranty will only cover parts that break as a result of problems with their material, manufacture or assembly – in other words, failures that are Mercedes' fault.

This does not extend to wear-and-tear items, which naturally wear out as they are used and are expected to be replaced over time. Examples of wear-and-tear items includes brake pads and windscreen wipers.

Typical parts covered under warranty include:

  • Engine (not including spark plugs)
  • Fuel system (not including fuel filter)
  • Cooling system (not including the coolant itself)
  • Gearbox (not including gearbox fluid)
  • Driveline
  • Suspension (not including shock absorbers)
  • Steering system
  • Braking system (not including pads, shoes, discs or drums)
  • Electrical parts (not including fuses)

See Mercedes' warranty terms and conditions for its full exclusions documentation. However, a non-exhaustive list of wear-and-tear items not covered under warranty includes:

  • Spark plugs
  • Wiper blades
  • Lubricants
  • Brake pads
  • Brake discs
  • Clutches
  • Tyres
  • Any damage to glass – except stress fractures

Like almost all vehicle warranties, Mercedes requires that you service the car in line with recommended manufacturer intervals. You can find the exact intervals for your model in your user manual, but most Mercedes cars need servicing every 10,000 miles or 12 months – whichever comes first. You should keep any receipts and paperwork from your Mercedes services as proof of maintenance should you need to claim on your warranty.

You should contact your local Mercedes dealer or service centre as soon as you notice a problem. Continuing to drive a broken car could cause further damage and will probably see your warranty claim rejected. You also need to follow any instructions given by the car's dashboard or Mercedes service centre, including stop-drive instructions if the problem is deemed significant enough.

You'll need to leave your Mercedes totally standard throughout its warranty period if you want to retain factory cover. Any modifications to your car will invalidate your warranty because Mercedes can't verify the quality of third-party parts. Any tampering with your Mercedes' digital systems such as mileage or VIN data will void your cover. This doesn't apply to official Mercedes accessories fitted when new or after purchase by an approved centre.

If Mercedes finds the failure was caused by 'misuse of the vehicle' such as 'driving at excessive speeds or engaging in motor sports', then it will reject your warranty claim. This also extends to any failures caused by outside damage, even if it wasn't your fault, as Mercedes can't be held liable for the problem. If you're buying a high-performance Mercedes-AMG car, you might want to talk to your dealer before attending any track events.

Mercedes warranty limited coverage items

Parts replaced outside of warranty claims

If Mercedes needs to replace any part on your car that isn't a warranty repair, that part will be covered for two years from the date you purchased it. This could be swapping a damaged trim piece, for example.

Official Mercedes accessories

Any official Mercedes accessories for your car will include warranty cover, but the length varies depending on whether the accessory was fitted when your car was new or by a service centre later on. Accessories fitted when new are covered for the full three-year period, while those fitted by Mercedes after the car's been sold are covered for two years from the point they were purchased.

Is Mercedes' three-year warranty transferable?

Mercedes CLE side on

Yes. Your Mercedes' factory warranty cover will automatically transfer to the new owner as long as it's still active. That means it's been serviced on time by a Mercedes-approved centre, is unmodified, and is less than three years old.

As a result, most nearly new Mercedes cars for sale at Motorpoint still have plenty of their original manufacturer cover remaining. Each individual Motorpoint vehicle listing shows exactly how many months warranty cover remains for that car. If the car is no longer covered by its original warranty, it includes a free three-month Motorpoint warranty.

How long is Mercedes' hybrid and EV battery warranty?

Mercedes EQE charging

Many models across the Mercedes lineup feature plug-in-hybrid power and even more are being added to its EQ range of full EVs. Both its PHEV and EV models use high-voltage battery packs that are covered by their own warranty terms. These battery warranties vary by model, so see Mercedes high-voltage battery warranty T&Cs for full details.

Mercedes plug-in-hybrid models include a six-year warranty for their battery packs, with a 62,000-mile distance limit. This only covers technical malfunctions with the battery pack and does not guarantee its total capacity over the warranty period.

Most Mercedes electric cars are covered for eight years with a 100,000-mile distance limit. This applies both to technical malfunctions of the battery pack and to its total capacity, with Mercedes guaranteeing it'll retain at least 70% of its capacity over the warranty period. Exceptions include EQE, EQE SUV, EQS and EQS SUV models, which are covered for 10 years, and older B-Class electric models with a 62,000-mile distance limit.

Despite Mercedes only guaranteeing its EV battery packs to 70% capacity over the warranty period, today's battery packs are expected to last much longer than this. In fact, the packs in today's EVs are expected to last the lifetime of the car without needing replacements. You can help your battery last as long as possible by keeping charge below 80% for day-to-day driving, and only using the full 100-0% range for long drives.

What is Mercedes' anti-perforation (rust) warranty?

Mercedes introduced a 30-year corrosion warranty in 1998 – one of the longest in the automotive industry. However, like most anti-perforations warranties, this only covers internal rust that forms as a result of material or manufacturing faults.

That means any rust that forms on your car's exterior caused by external sources isn't covered. This can include unrepaired accident damage that's exposed your vehicle's bare metal surfaces, or corrosion caused by insufficient cleaning.

Can you extend Mercedes' three-year warranty?

Yes. Mercedes offers an extended warranty product for its cars. This is limited to cars that have covered less than 120,000 miles – or 100,000 miles for AMG and Maybach models – and are less than nine years old.

You can choose from 12 or 24-month warranty contracts, with prices varying depending on your particular model and its age. In addition, there's the option to take out a rolling one-month extended warranty contract.

After your original Mercedes factory warranty runs out, you don't have to restrict yourself to another Mercedes extended warranty. You can always take out an extended warranty with a third-party provider, which might end up more affordable than a Mercedes-backed program. All our cars have the option of a Motorpoint extended warranty.

Does Mercedes' three-year warranty apply to all models?

Yes. All Mercedes passenger vehicles are covered by its three-year manufacturer warranty. Provided the T&Cs have been stuck to and the car is less than three years old, you'll be able to claim on the warranty for any faults.

That applies whether you're driving the practical Mercedes B-Class, the stylish Mercedes CLA or the imposing Mercedes GLC Coupe.
