The Audi Q5 is the brand's best-selling car.
It's easy to see why thanks to the Q5's composed driving experience, high-tech infotainment system and its spacious, premium interior. Not to mention the all-weather capability from its quattro all-wheel-drive system.
This guide breaks down the Q5 range, including the different models and trims available. We'll also take a trip through the Q5's history to see where this family SUV first began.
Audi Q5 models explained

The Q5 was Audi's second-ever SUV, launching three years after the seven-seat Audi Q7. It sells in a fiercely competitive class that includes the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC. All Q5s are five-seater cars with five doors – four passenger doors and a hatchback-style boot lid that counts as the fifth.
Audi Q5 Sportback

The Q5 Sportback is an offshoot of the main Q5 bodystyle offered on second and third-generation cars. While the car's overall dimensions remain effectively unchanged, the Sportback gains a swoopy, coupe-like roofline giving the car a racier look than the standard Q5. There is a slight tradeoff, however, with rear headroom and cargo space above the parcel shelf both taking a hit.
Audi SQ5

The SQ5 is a high-performance version of the Q5, designed to compete with sporty variants of the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC and Porsche Macan. It's been offered on every Q5 generation, always equipped with an auto gearbox, all-wheel drive and a muscular V6 engine. First and second-generation SQ5s were notable because they offered a 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 – unusual when most rivals used petrol power – although third-generation cars are now petrol only.
Audi Q5 trim levels

- Sport – this is the entry-level Q5 but it's still well-equipped. Current models get 19-inch alloy wheels, climate control, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, park assist and a 360º parking camera
- S Line – this is Audi's sporty trim level, gaining larger alloy wheels and a meaner body kit. You also get sports seats and aluminium pedals
- Black Edition – this is mostly the same as S Line, but the alloy wheels and all the aluminium-effect styling details are swapped out for moody black alternatives
- Edition 1 – this is a high-spec trim level offered to celebrate the launch of a new or facelifted model. The latest Q5 Edition 1 gets matrix LED headlights with customisable running lights, microfibre and leather upholstery, and electrically adjustable front seats
- SQ5 – this is the range-topping Q5 model. You get all the luxuries from lesser trims along with a powerful engine up front, plus enhanced suspension and brakes to cope with the extra performance

What's the best Audi Q5 model?
Each new generation of Q5 has brought a brace of innovations to the table, helping keep the car competitive against its BMW and Mercedes rivals. Since this Q5 is defined by its cutting-edge tech, the latest version is arguably the best. Its ultra-wide screen panel features pin-sharp, high-contrast graphics, which are easy to read at a glance, and let you control a huge range of on-board functions.
Of course, the latest Q5 only arrived in late 2024, so most nearly new and Q5s are second-generation models. These still feel up-to-date inside – especially facelifted models from 2021 onwards – and are available at a substantial discount compared to the latest Q5. So consider a second-gen Q5 if your budget is a little tighter.
