Audi hatchback FAQs

Yes. Audi makes two hatchback options starting with the smaller Audi A1, which is around the same size as a Ford Fiesta or Volkswagen Polo. Then there's the Audi A3 Sportback, which is a family hatchback that rivals the Mercedes A-Class, BMW 1 Series and Volkswagen Golf.

The A1 is more affordable and easier to live with in the city thanks to its smaller dimensions, but the A3 Sportback is a better choice if you regularly carry back-seat passengers and has more high-performance options if you want something sporty.

You've got two choices for Audi hatchbacks – the smaller Audi A1 and the larger, more expensive Audi A3 Sportback.

The A1 is the more affordable of the two and should be a little easier to live with in the city thanks to its smaller dimensions. Despite its compact size, it still feels every inch an Audi, with plush materials, lots of on-board tech and a smooth, grippy driving experience.

You might find the A3 Sportback is a better choice for you, however, if you regularly carry rear-seat passengers. Where you can only just fit two adults in the back of an A1, they'll have a fair bit more space to get comfortable in the A3 Sportback. That also translates to much more room if you're trying to wrestle your offspring into a child seat.

There isn't actually a difference between Sportback and hatchback. Audi previously made its A3 hatchback in both sporty three-door version and a more practical five-door model, which it called the 'Sportback'.

The company has since dropped the three-door A3 entirely so the five-door A3 Sportback is the only hatchback version you can buy. You can also buy the A3 as a four-door saloon and as a two-door convertible, but neither of these models has a hatchback boot lid.

It's important to note that Sportback is also different from 'Avant' which is the brand name for Audi estate cars.
