Motorpoint joins forces with Widnes Vikings for Easter Monday rugby league clash

19 March 2018 Press Release

Motorpoint has teamed up with Widnes Vikings to help celebrate the return of the Karalius Cup to the town next month

“As a business that is proud to play an active role in its community, we are committed to supporting the things that are important to local people, especially our hometown team – Widnes Vikings”

The UK’s largest independent car retailer, which is based on Derby Road in Widnes, is a long standing supporter of the Superleague outfit and decided to join forces with the club to make the Karalius Cup fixture against St Helens on Easter Monday a game to remember.

As part of its sponsorship of what is now known as the #MotorpointBigMatch, Motorpoint decided to creatively showcase the rivalry between both teams, with Widnes Vikings legend Mark Smith taking on Saints’ great Paul Sculthope in a series of challenges for social media filmed at Oulton Park. The challenges, which are set to be released over the next few days, will see the two former captains battle it out at the famous Cheshire motor racing circuit to win bragging rights for their team, ahead of the big game on April 2.

Motorpoint will also be creating a number of special fan experiences, including hosting a Vikings Easter Egg Hunt at their Widnes showroom. It will also be running a competition that will give one lucky Saints or Vikings supporter the chance to present the Karalius Cup to the winning team on the day.

Kevin Cartwright, General Manager of Motorpoint, Widnes, explained: “Widnes Vikings vs St Helens is one of the signature Super League fixtures, so we are delighted to have the opportunity to help add some extra excitement around this special game.

“As a business that is proud to play an active role in its community, we are committed to supporting the things that are important to local people, especially our hometown team – Widnes Vikings. We hope that these efforts help build a big crowd for what is set to be a fantastic game and give the loyal supporters a real day to remember.”

Joe Mellor, Co-Captain of Widnes Vikings, added: “The Vikings vs Saints game is always a special one, with some fantastic battles on the field over the years. It is great to see Motorpoint getting behind the fixture this season, to help make it an even bigger event. We are excited to be playing for the Karalius Cup and for the big atmosphere that will be created. I hope that supporters of both teams come down in numbers for what is set be a brilliant Easter Monday derby day.”
