SUVs might now top Volvo’s sales charts, but think of the Scandinavian car maker and there’s a good chance you’ll picture a practical, safe and boxy but handsome estate, perhaps with a dog in the boot, certainly kids in the rear seats.

The thoroughly modern V60 continues that proud tradition, but dials up the design appeal for a look that’s no less premium than German alternatives, and brings a welcome ice-cool Swedish twist – the LED headlights are even called Thor’s Hammer and could’ve been carved from a frozen lake.

Factor in highly efficient engines (including plug-in hybrids), a plush, calming interior and high-tech safety and the V60 is very much a Volvo estate for the 21st century.

What kind of engine is in a Volvo V60?

Every engine in the range is based around a 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit. Earlier diesels are badged D3 or D4, both with six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearboxes. T4 and T5 petrols are equipped with the automatic gearbox, but all of the above are turbocharged and front-wheel drive. Cross Country Plus models later added all-wheel drive for D4 diesels and T5 petrols.

The plug-in hybrid variants use a highly unusual turbocharged and supercharged version of the 2.0-litre unit, to which Volvo adds an electric motor for up to 25 miles of zero-emissions range and all-wheel drive. Earlier examples of these plug-in models are marketed as either the T6 or T8 Twin Engine.

More recently, all core petrol and diesel models have become pre-fixed with a ‘B’ – B3, B4, B5 and B6 for petrols, and the B4 diesel. Twin Engines models are re-branded as the Recharge T6 and more powerful Polestar Engineered.

Volvo V60 body styles

The V60 is available exclusively in a five-door estate bodystyle, with 529 litres of luggage space for plenty of space. A four-door saloon version is marketed as the S60.

What are the different trim levels when buying a used Volvo V60?

The V60 launched with two core trim levels: Inscription or Momentum.

Inscription is marketed as a more luxurious specification, with chrome exterior details, 18-inch diamond-cut alloys, comfort seats with leather upholstery and Driftwood interior trim inserts. Inscription Pro builds on these foundations with adaptive headlights, 19-inch alloys, Nappa leather trim, ventilated and heated front seats, heated steering wheel and head-up display.

Momentum is billed as a sportier trim, with 17-inch alloys, black exterior trim, Comfort seats with Textile or City Weave upholstery and a 12-inch driver display. Momentum Pro upgrades to adaptive headlights, a handsfree tailgate, leather trim, heated front seats and steering wheel, plus electric memory functionality for the driver’s seat and exterior mirrors.

By the 2020 model year, the line-up had evolved to entry-level Momentum Plus, R-Design Plus, Polestar Engineered (exclusively for the T8), Inscription Plus and Cross Country Plus.

Momentum Plus features auto LED headlights, cruise control, keyless go, the Dynamic chassis, 18-inch alloys, front and rear parking sensors, leather trim, and heated front seats. R-Design Plus builds on the generous standard specification with 18-inch alloys, gloss-black exterior trim, lowered sports suspension, sports seats in Nappa leather/Textile trim, rear privacy glass and an electric tailgate. Polestar Engineered adds 19-inch alloys, an uprated chassis, heated steering wheel and super-desirable Harman Kardon audio. Inscription Plus puts the focus on sophistication with Nappa ventilated trim, 18-inch alloys, keyless entry and go, Driftwood interior trim inserts and an electric tailgate.

The Cross Country Plus bridges the gap to Volvo’s full SUV models, with 60mm additional ground clearance, a more comfort-focussed Touring chassis, charcoal protective body mouldings and Hill Descent Control. There’s a focus on luxury too, with leather seats, front seat cushion extensions, an electric tailgate and keyless entry and go.

What technology will I find in my V60?

The V60 features the 9.0-inch Sensus touchscreen infotainment system as standard. It controls everything from climate control to sat-nav functions, and is even optimised to work when you’re wearing gloves. Other features include voice control, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone connectivity too.

Momentum models from 2018 get the 12-inch digital driver display, which is fitted across the range by the 2020 model year.

Volvo City Safety is standard on all models, with automatic braking and collision avoidance systems that can detect pedestrians, cyclists and large animals such as moose or, more likely in the UK, deer.
