If you’re after a hugely desirable premium hatchback with a twist, the Volvo V40 should be right at the top of your list. All Volvo’s core strengths are naturally present and correct, including exceptional safety protection, refinement to make a library seem noisy and quite possibly the most comfortable seats you’ll ever sit on. But there’s an added dose of Scandi cool for this slick five door, and it drives with more verve than Volvos of old, thanks to a chassis derived from the famously dynamic Ford Focus (you might remember that Ford owned Volvo previously).

So check out our spec secrets below, then take a look at the great range of used Volvo V40s for sale available at Motorpoint…

Or try these: Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3, BMW 1-series

What Engine Does The Volvo V40 Have?

While there was a wider choice of engines earlier in the life cycle, since 2018 Volvo has offered two petrols badged T2 and T3 (in both cases a 2.0-litre with a manual gearbox, but a 1.5 when paired with the auto) and two diesels badged D2 and D3 (both 2.0-litre turbodiesels).

What Body Styles Are Available On Used Volvo V40 Cars?

The Volvo V40 is available exclusively as a five-door hatchback, but it’s an unusually rakish, coupe-like design in this segment. If you want a dash of crossover cool, don’t forget the V40 Cross Country, which adds a raised ride height and protective black body cladding to the mix.

What Are The Volvo V40 Trim Levels?

Momentum trim kicks off the range with 16-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, LED headlamps, and textile trim, though you can add Nav Plus to the name to upgrade the infotainment (see Technology, below).

Inscription upgrades to 17-inch alloys, leather trim, rain-sensing wipers, the Digital Driver Display and sat-nav (see Technology).

R-Design is like a Volvo V40 doing cross-fit – there’s more athletic styling courtesy of a tweaked front grille and front bumper, 17-inch alloys and a Nubuck textile/leather trim mix.

Nav Plus introduces sat-nav, while R-Design Pro dials up the appeal with 18-inch alloys, leather sports trim, privacy glass and auto wipers.

Volvo V40 Technology

All V40s are equipped with a minimum of the Sensus infotainment system, which features a 5.0-inch colour screen and eight-speaker High-Performance audio. The Digital Driver Display is standard on Inscription models, and replaces analogue dials with three different themes – Elegance, Eco and Performance – that allow the driver to switch between different back-lighting options, and to choose between displaying a rev counter or speedo in the centre dial. Sat-nav comes on stream from Momentum Nav Plus trim.
