What Fiat models are there?

The iconic Fiat 500 may be the carmaker’s smallest model, but it’s been hugely successful. With its cute looks and fun dashboard, the 500 is undoubtedly a head-turner – despite its popularity. Fiat’s city steering function makes driving and manoeuvring around town a piece of cake, and its small size makes it easy to find a parking space. The 500 isn’t really suited to carrying four people on a regular basis, but your friends will be fine in the rear seats for short journeys. Engine choices include a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol, with the latter being more modern and economical. There’s also a fully electric version, which we’ll cover further down the page.

Next up is the Panda, a charming city car that’s more utilitarian and practical than the 500. It’s a little bit more basic inside than the similarly sized Kia Picanto, but the Panda will get under your skin like few other cars. Previously, there was even a Panda 4x4 that made surprisingly light work of off-road terrain.

Fiat also sells a Ford Focus rival in the shape of the Tipo hatchback. It’s a practical car with a bigger boot than the Focus. The interior is well laid out and most versions come very well equipped. Talking of versions, there have been plenty of Tipo special editions, while there’s also a more rugged-looking variant called the Tipo Cross.

Keen to make the most of the 500 name, Fiat also built the 500L people-carrier. It’s spacious despite being quite compact, so works well around town. A used Fiat 500L presents good value for money and suits families with young children.

 

Which Fiat models are SUVs?

Fiat sells one SUV, the 500X. As the name and styling suggest, it’s a car that brings the design of the 500 with extra rear-seat space and practicality. The higher ride height makes the 500X popular, too. Cross versions look more SUV like while Sport models bring a racier look, but standard kit levels are good across the range. Under the cutesy exterior it’s very similar to the Jeep Renegade.

That depends on who you ask, as some will say Fiats are faultless and some will say that the brand stands for ‘Fix It Again Tomorrow’. The general consensus is that Fiat’s reliability could be better, but you’re more likely to experience annoying electrical glitches rather than major faults. Fiat makes one electric car, plus a couple of electric vans. The electric Fiat 500 might have the same name and similar styling to its petrol-powered sister, but it’s actually a whole new generation of the 500 that’s EV-only. Two battery sizes are available, with the larger 42kWh battery option providing a range of 199 miles – and there’s fast-charging for longer journeys. High-spec cars come with lots of equipment plus upholstery made from recycled plastics. It’s even available with a fold-back fabric roof.

Dolcevita is a Fiat trim level that, depending on the model, incorporates a sunroof or a folding fabric roof. On the Fiat 500X Dolcevita, for example, the fabric roof opens further than a conventional sunroof but doesn’t come with the impracticalities of a full convertible.

Fiat is almost unique in having a button that makes the steering lighter. This comes in handy in tight city streets and means you’re straining to turn the wheel when parking. Simply press the button that looks like a steering wheel and revel in how easy it is to twirl the wheel.

Fiat’s RED trim level is a partnership with the charity of the same name, which helps to fight AIDS and COVID-19. Available on all current Fiat models, the models introduce red detailing inside and out, plus a hand sanitiser kit.

On some Fiat models you can get Seaqual upholstery, which is partly made from recycled ocean plastics. It’s an alternative to the standard cloth seats but is typically only found on selected models.
