What Citroen C5 Aircross trim levels are there?

Citroen likes to chop and change its trim levels from time to time. Older versions come in Feel, Flair and Flair Plus trim levels, with all three getting auto wipers, alloy wheels and rear parking sensors. Flair adds front sensors, a reversing camera and privacy glass, among other things, while top-spec Flair Plus gets big wheels, adaptive cruise control, auto high beam and an electric bootlid.

Later on, the trim levels were called Sense, Sense Plus, Shine and Shine Plus, with a couple of special editions like the C-Series and Black Edition thrown in for good measure. Sense gets bright LED headlights, rear sensors and lane-keep assist. Sense Plus adds two-zone air con and a reversing camera, while Shine gets darkened trim, suede trim and keyless entry. Top-spec Shine Plus has part-leather trim and plenty more besides.

Citroen C5 Aircross interior and technology

Some of the parts might be shared with its Peugeot and Vauxhall cousins, but the C5 Aircross has its own distinctive interior style. There are a couple of funky touches here and there, plus a large touchscreen on top of the dashboard. It’s right in your eyeline, so you won’t need to take your eyes off the road for too long. 

With that being said, you do need to use the touchscreen for the majority of the car’s features, including air conditioning. This approach doesn’t suit everyone, so make sure you’re happy with how it operates before you buy.

Citroen C5 Aircross 1.2 PureTech petrol

Used in various Peugeot, Citroen, DS and Vauxhall models, the C5 Aircross’ 1.2-litre petrol engine is certainly punchy enough for this application. Despite only having 130hp, it won’t feel too slow – well, unless you’re Sir Lewis Hamilton. It shouldn’t prove expensive to run, either, returning north of 45mpg.

Citroen C5 Aircross 1.6 PureTech petrol

You might come across a 180hp 1.6-litre petrol engine, which is noticeably quicker than the 130hp engine but still offers over 40mpg. This engine only comes with an automatic gearbox, and isn’t a particularly common engine – most buyers are happy enough with the smaller petrol.

Citroen C5 Aircross 1.5 BlueHDi diesel

Although there’s the plug-in hybrid available, the diesel engine will be the most efficient for drivers with regular long journeys. Performance-wise, it matches the 1.2-litre petrol engine, but is capable of over 55mpg.

Drive a lot around town? The hybrid Citroen C5 Aircross is your best pick, as it’s capable of over 30 miles of zero-emission electric driving from a full charge of the battery. Drive like that as often as you can and you could see 200mpg, although on long journeys where the petrol engine is doing most of the work, your mpg will drop to a similar figure to the solely petrol models.

The Citroen C5 Aircross is a five-door, five-seat SUV with some quirky styling touches that have become typical for the brand. There are split headlights, chrome-lined windows and a version of Citroen’s Airbumps that are meant to reduce car park dings.

Measuring 4.5 metres long, the C5 Aircross is a pretty similar size to most mid-size SUVs. The Citroen, however, offers significantly more luggage space than some of its rivals. There are up to 580 litres of room with the rear seats in place, extending to 720 litres if you slide the rear seats forwards, or a huge 1,630 litres with them folded. It’s worth noting that the plug-in hybrid reduces carrying capacity to 460 litres with the rear seats up, 600 litres with the rear seats slid forwards and 1,510 litres with them folded flat.

Those handy rear seats mean you can offer lanky passengers more leg room, or prioritise boot space when you don’t need so much rear seat space. The big Citroen is really good for passenger space on the whole.

You can buy a used C5 Aircross with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. PureTech petrol models have either 1.2 or 1.6-litre capacities, while BlueHDi turbodiesels are available in 1.5 or 2.0-litre flavours. Six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearboxes are available.

The plug-in hybrid combines the most powerful petrol engine with an electric motor and automatic gearbox for strong performance with up to 34 miles of pure electric running. That means it’s particularly well suited to regular shorter trips, but just remember that the diesel remains the long-distance mpg champ.
