Citroen C4 Cactus
The fun looking family car
Citroen used to be a car maker that liked to think out of the box to offer quirky cars for the masses.
Think of the 2CV and the DS. However, in recent years they have become just like everyone else, predictable and a bit bland with the exception of the chic DS3 super-mini.
Now you can add the C4 Cactus to the list of Citroen models with the X factor, starting with the totally unique styling which makes it look quite like nothing else on the road.
From the thin slit headlights and distinctive double chevron grille to the plastic air bumps that run across the doors this is the Citroen that dares to be different. And the air bumps are perfect to save your bodywork from car parking dents - trust me.
It’s the same story on the inside where Citroen have again ripped up the rule book with a simple minimalist cabin that still feels funky with some neat trim finishes, but by the same token, is also practical with comfortable armchair style front seats and 358 litres of boot space. In fact it is only the driving experience where things become predictable and a bit like every other car - which in some senses is no bad thing.
There's a choice of a either a 1.2 petrol or 1.6 diesel engine but my preference is for the diesel because its not only livelier but you get around 70 mpg plus and doesn't cost anything in road tax.
If you are looking for a family car that is both affordable to buy and run, and also totally stands out from the crowd, then make sure you test drive the Citroen Cactus.
