You are what you... drive!

28 September 2017 Blog

You've heard the theory that pets often look like their owners? Well new research from Motorpoint suggests that the same might apply for cars and their owners too!

“When you’re on the hunt for your next car, just remember the new Motorpoint motto – you are what you drive!”

Let’s be honest, we’re all guilty of spotting a car on the road and making an immediate assumption about who the driver is and what they look like. That’s why we decided to ask a sample of the UK public for their opinion on what they think certain cars say about their owners. So, if you’re the owner of one of our top five car manufacturers, read on to see if you agree with the results…

Driving the Research

Before we began to conduct our research, we picked five car manufacturers that were not only popular with UK drivers but also had distinctive branding and strong public recognition.

They were:

Mercedes

BMW

Fiat

Porsche

Range Rover

Then, we asked our sample of the UK public a number of questions about what they thought the owners would look like, such as their age, gender, weight, height and choice of clothing.

The results were very interesting, and using the opinion of what the owners of each of these cars looked like, we created e-fit visual representations of these drivers.

The Public Opinion

So, what did the public say when we asked them what person they thought would drive our five brands of car?

The UK public believed that drivers of Mercedes were likely to be driven by the older gentleman who has enjoyed the finer things in life. Most assumed that the driver would fall into the age bracket of 65+ (the oldest out of the five selected brands) and might be of larger stature.

However, Mercedes owners need not start making plans to go on a diet (or worse - sell their cars); the UK public also thought that owners of these cars would be well-dressed gents, in business-smart clothing, suggesting they held a successful professional job.

In contrast, the cars with the youngest drivers (aged between 26 and 35) were owners of Fiats and BMWs, with casually-dressed females between the height of 5’5” and 6-foot driving the former, and males between 6-foot and 6’6” driving the latter.

According to public opinion, Porsche drivers were expected to be aged between 46-55, weighing between 13-16st and dressed casually in sportswear. Range Rover drivers were viewed as being younger, aged 36-45 and standing tall between 6-foot and 6’6”.

What Does Your Car Say About You?

When you’re searching for your next car from Motorpoint, don’t forget to take a moment to think about what your car says about you.

For example, if you’re using your car a lot for business use, a BMW is probably the best choice to make a good first impression, with our survey showing that the UK public imagined these car owners to be young professionals dressed in business smart clothing.

Of course, all these results are based on public opinion, and are not an accurate representation of all UK drivers, but it’s interesting to see how from an objective point of view that your choice of car can speak volumes about the kind of person you are.

So, when you’re on the hunt for your next car, just remember our new motto – you are what you drive!
