We’ve made our choices across a range of body styles so, whether you need a big car or a small car, a hatchback or an SUV, we’ve got you covered. We’re not just looking at the numbers – these all-rounders are great to drive, easy to own and packed with practical features.
Small cars with big boots
Skoda Fabia
Boot space: 380 litres
The Skoda Fabia is small on the outside but makes great use of the little amount of space it takes up. Along with a spacious, high-quality cabin, the Fabia has an impressive 380-litre boot, which is among the largest in its class – and matches cars from the class above, such as the Volkswagen Golf. Plus, most models get an adjustable boot floor that can sit flush when the rear seats are folded down, creating a long, wide load bay without a step in the middle.

Renault Clio
Boot space: 391 litres
You might glance at the Renault Clio and think it's just like any other small hatch but it has a few tricks up its sleeve. The 391-litre boot in petrol versions puts it right at the top of the class for cargo room and the wide, square shape makes it easy to load a pushchair or suitcase. The Clio is affordable to run and fun to drive, and has one of the best interiors of any supermini – so it has all the boxes ticked. Hybrid cars get a 300-litre boot that’s still on a par with its closest rivals.

Small SUVs with big boots
Dacia Duster
Boot space: 445 litres
For families on a budget, the Dacia Duster is a great choice. This affordable SUV has enough passenger space for taller adults and handles child seats with ease. The 445-litre boot means the Duster can carry a lot more than most cars in its price range, and folding the rear seats grants you access to a cargo area that can almost rival some small vans. You don’t need to compromise too much on the luxuries, either, with climate control, an infotainment system and a reversing camera featuring on higher-level trims.

Renault Captur
Boot space: 422-536 litres
The Renault Captur makes light work of city driving thanks to its composed handling and straightforward cabin. It’s a few millimetres shorter than some rival small SUVs and easy to slot into tight parking spaces, but has one of the largest boots in the class thanks to sliding rear-row seating. If you need to carry tall passengers, simply put the seats into their furthest back position – you’ll still have a near-class-leading 422 litres or, if you need to maximise cargo room, slide the rear seats forward to expand the boot to 536 litres.

Renault Megane E-Tech Electric
Boot space: 440 litres
Every generation of Renault Megane is boldly different to the one before, but this new one boasts the biggest changes yet. It’s now a crossover-styled fully electric car to compete with the Volkswagen ID.3 and Nissan Leaf. The boot is much bigger than those cars, though, and its 440-litre space trumps many SUVs. Renault’s electric Megane also offers a fantastic driving experience and a state-of-the-art interior.

Skoda Scala
Boot space: 467 litres
The Skoda Scala is a bit of a ‘Goldilocks’ car. If the Fabia is too small and the Octavia is too big, the Scala should be juuust right. Cheap to run and spacious, the Scala has plenty to offer if you don’t mind its conservative design. But, given that the Scala is great value – especially on the used market, where you can get one for around £150 per month – that might not matter so much if you just need a big boot without paying too much.

Family cars with big boots
Volkswagen Tiguan
Boot space: 615 litres
If you live in the suburbs and don’t have a Tiguan, chances are one of your neighbours does. This is one of the most popular family SUVs and it’s easy to see why – it has a premium-ish badge, acres of rear-seat space and a truly whopping boot. Whatever family life throws at you, the Tiguan will shrug and get on with it.

MG ZS
Boot space: 448 litres
Squeezing between small and midsize SUVs, the MG ZS could be the ideal size – it feels compact around town but big when you want to load it up with garden trimmings and tackle a tip trip. If you want a nearly new car with the largest possible boot for the smallest amount of cash, the MG ZS should be one of the cars you look at. There’s an electric version, too.

Estate cars with big boots
Skoda Superb Estate
Boot space: 660 litres
If you can fit a larger car into your life, take a look at the Skoda Superb. The car lives up to its name in so many areas – acres of passenger room, an effortless driving experience and generous equipment lists – but scores a perfect 10 for boot space. There are 625 litres of space in the hatchback Superb but a whopping 660 litres in the estate and, if you fold the rear seats flat, there isn’t a flatpack furniture shop in the land that’ll pose a challenge to the Superb.

Ford Focus Estate
Boot space: 608 litres
While the Ford Focus hatchback’s boot is merely okay, the longroof Focus Estate boasts a huge luggage bay that’ll take care of house moves and all the junk that needs to be transported if you have a couple of kids. It’s clever, too, with dividers and hooks letting you use the boot’s full capacity without things flying around. The Focus couples space with fizzy handling and a range of well-equipped trim levels.

Ford Galaxy
Boot space (with five seats): 1,301 litres (measured to the roof)
The Ford Galaxy has built a loyal fanbase thanks to its fantastic practicality. Its footprint is actually smaller than a Mondeo, but the Galaxy’s tall body means it’ll give many vans a run for their money. With all seven seats in place, you get 300 litres of room – the same as a Ford Fiesta. With five seats in use, you get 1,301 litres, which is more than most regular cars have with just two seats up. Fold all five rear seats down to gain access to the full 2,339 litre boot – which, frankly, is more space than we’d know what to do with.

Citroen Berlingo
Boot space: 775 litres
Let’s be honest, if you need lots of boot space, you might be better off with a van. The passenger-carrying Citroen Berlingo has some funky styling touches to set it apart from the very utilitarian van version, but the space remains. As a five-seater, the standard-length Berlingo offers nearly 800 litres of space, or get the XL version for 1,050 litres.
Family SUVs with big boots
SEAT Tarraco
Boot space (with five seats): 700 litres
The SEAT Tarraco shares parts and engines with the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, and all three are fantastically practical. We’d pick the SEAT, however, thanks to its more purposeful styling and great value – especially as a used car. With all seven seats in place you get 230 litres of room, or 700 litres if you fold the third row. Folding the second row gives you 1,775 litres of space – perfect for bikes or trips to the tip.

Peugeot 5008
Boot space (with five seats): 780 litres
For family buyers, the Peugeot 5008 is a great choice if you don’t want to sacrifice style in your pursuit of practicality. This attractive seven seater makes light work of carrying passengers, or you can fold the sixth and seventh seat down to access 780 litres of cargo room. For even more load-lugging potential, you can fold the second row and remove the third row entirely, bringing total capacity to a massive 2,150 litres.

Vauxhall Grandland X
Boot space: 510 litres
Having space is a luxury, apparently, so by that reckoning the Vauxhall Grandland X must be pretty opulent. There’s plenty of space in the back seats and a 510-litre boot behind – so far, so ‘family SUV’ – but the Grandland X is widely available for under £200 per month on PCP finance. It’s a mansion for the price of a semi-detached bungalow.

Hyundai Tucson
Boot space: 513 litres
The last-shape Tucson is a close rival for the Grandland X on boot space and price, plus it comes with the remainder of Hyundai’s five-year warranty. It may not boast quite as much space or the eye-catching looks of the most recent Tucson, but it’s a spacious and solid car nonetheless.

BMW 5 Series Touring
Boot space: 560 litres
If your budget is a little larger, why not treat yourself to a BMW 5 Series Touring estate. This motorway cruiser has it all – fantastic handling, a comfortable ride, strong engines and a plush, tech-loaded cabin. Boot space in the 5 Series is 560 litres with the rear seats in place – ideal for a family and their holiday luggage – or fold the rear seats to expand the cargo bay to 1,700 litres.

Audi Q7
Boot space (with five seats): 770 litres
Audi’s Q7 offers all the brand’s usual strengths – premium materials, high-tech interiors and show-stopping style – in a chunky SUV format. You get 295 litres of boot space with all seven seats in place but, if you can convince your passengers to vacate the Q7’s posh cabin, you’ll get 770 litres with five seats in place and a huge 1,955 litres with just the front two up. That makes the Q7 equally adept whether you’re on the school run or hauling camping gear.

Electric cars with big boots
Audi Q8 e-tron
Boot space: 569 litres
Audi’s luxury electric SUV feels like it’s as big as an aircraft carrier. That’s great for passenger space and boot space, and the Q8 e-tron is as spacious as it is luxurious. Up front, the Q8 e-tron feels wide and airy, not to mention very upmarket with plush materials and enough technology to rival the most advanced warships.
Skoda Enyaq
Boot space: 585 litres
The Enyaq is everything we love from Skoda but with a futureproof and near-silent electric powertrain. It’s solidly built, intuitive to use, incredibly spacious and even great to drive. Big-battery cars offer up to 330 miles of range, so you can carry lots of things a long way away.
