Mobile Phones
29 January 2010
Almost two thirds of motorists back plans by the Government to get tougher on people caught using their mobile phone while behind the wheel according to a new Motorpoint survey.
Over 73% of people quizzed by the car supermarket giant felt drivers flouting the ban on mobile phones should receive harsher treatment by the police. Some 700 people took part in the snap two-day poll at www.motorpoint.co.uk.
Anyone found using a mobile phone illegally while on the road faces a £60 fine and three points on their driving licence. However, the Department for Transport has announced that it is considering increasing penalties in the near future.
Says David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint: “Anyone who drives on the roads will see for themselves the number of motorists who still use their mobiles while behind the wheel. It is clear from our poll that other people have had enough and are now calling for tougher penalties to make them see sense. Alternatively, they can come to Motorpoint and have a hands-free kit fitted to avoid costly fines for only £199 plus VAT.”
